St. Andrew - Our Patron
St. Andrew was St. Peter’s brother. They were fishermen living in Capernaum. He was led to find Jesus after following John the Baptist and listening to John’s testimony. He brought Peter with him. Jesus subsequently told both of them He would be making them the “fishers of men.” He and Peter left everything to follow Jesus. After the Crucifixion of Jesus, Andrew preached in Scythia and along the Black Sea as far as Kiev. He is the patron saint of Ukraine, Romania, Russia and Scotland. Scotland has St. Andrew’s cross emblazoned on the country flag. St. Andrew was crucified, but on an X shaped cross at his request rather than the Latin cross like the one used for Jesus because he did not feel worthy to be crucified the same way. St. Andrew’s feast day is November 30th.
